Generation 1 (Portraits of My Father): Generation 1 continues my approach of using well worn material objects as a mechanism for portrayal. My father was number 8 of 10 children born to Norwegian immigrants who had settled in Peever, South Dakota. As the child of immigrants, he was taught early on to go after the "American Dream". Using the flag he retrieved while on an expedition to Antartica in 1969, I wanted to portray this man, his dreams and the consequences of achieving them. The flag is frayed and a bit faded. Yet it undeniably upholds it's emblematic duties, both as a mechanism for portrayal and as a symbol of the American cultural landscape.
